Recently, I was talking to someone who spent a majority of their off-duty time going to school and doing the work required to do well in those classes. They also had a second job to support his family so his wife could stay at home with their young children. Not to mention, he still finds the time do things with his family and is a top-performer on the job. He told me he would rather embrace the suck now when he had the energy and ability so his family could have a better life later. It takes discipline to do hard things when we could easily follow the herd; however, looking back we usually regret the missed opportunities we had.
