Most professionals make the same mistake when trying to grow or learn something new; they wait for the “perfect” big block of time. The free Saturday. The week off between projects. The someday.
Here’s the problem…it rarely comes. When it does, the marathon session leaves you mentally drained, not motivated to repeat it and most likely will not have the outcome you were hoping to achieve.
There’s a better way and it takes just 1% of your day.
The Power of Micro-Progress
Neuroscience calls it the Progress Principle: even the smallest visible wins can spark a surge of motivation, creativity, and resilience for the next day.
Fifteen minutes a day may sound too small to matter, but here’s why it works:
- Consistency compounds.
If you improve at something by just 1% each day, you’ll be 37× better after a year (1.01^365 ≈ 37.8). - Motivation snowballs.
Your brain rewards small, quick wins with dopamine, making you want to repeat the action. - Willpower lasts longer.
Short, focused sessions are easier to protect from interruptions and easier to bounce back to if you miss a day.
How to Apply the 1% Rule Today
Here’s the exact playbook I use (and teach in The 1% Solution):
- Pick one growth target.
A skill, habit, or project you want to see real progress in over the next 90 days. - Anchor it to an existing habit.
For example:- While the coffee brews.
- Right after your workout.
- During your lunch break.
- Track your streak.
Use a habit tracker app, a paper calendar, or the free 1% Scorecard to see your progress at a glance. - Keep the win visible and winnable.
End each 15-minute block with a visible outcome, such as, a note in your journal, a marked-off checklist item, or a small deliverable.
Real-World Example
When I wanted to read more leadership books, I stopped aiming for “read a chapter a day” and started with a 15-minute timer.
That’s it.
- One book turned into two… then three.
- Soon, reading felt as natural as my morning coffee.
- Over time, I wasn’t just reading, I was applying ideas, teaching them, and building credibility.
Here’s the kicker: this 15-minute habit became the most leveraged 1% of my entire day.
Your Turn
If you could grow in just 1% of your day, what would you choose?
