One of my favorite days as a supervisor is providing the Initial Feedback (different organizations will call it different things). The ultimate goal is to let the employee know what my expectations are for them, then about 6 months later I give them a “mid-term” and let them know how they’re doing. Anyways, I started every feedback the same way, with the same question…tell me your story, tell me a little about yourself. I can’t tell you how many times I sat there in amazement, jaw dropped, listening to them. You work with people every day, you know how they are as an employee, but do you know if they are married, have kids, are their parents alive, what struggles they overcame to get where they are today? Ask a simple question and you’ll get an amazing answer! Get to know your people, not your employees, you’ll be glad you did!
