Since I have been teleworking through this pandemic, I have had a lot of time with my 10 and 7 year old. We enjoy going on bike rides throughout the neighborhood and I use them as an opportunity to teach lessons of leadership without them knowing. I allow one of them to lead and they are responsible for choosing the path, spotting hazards, crossing streets, and even dictating water breaks. Here they get an opportunity to make decisions on the go, the one not leading learns to be a follower, and they both learn the challenges of each role. Prior to all of this, I have had several conversations about these exact concepts, but they were always just words. Ironically, they understand these concepts so much more now. Show the way, don’t just talk about it.
