Man, I love the topic of growing and mentoring people! My mind has been thinking about all of the positions that I’ve worked over my career and where it all started. I worked at a fast food restaurant, retired as a squadron commander from the Air Force and now work at a huge IT consulting firm. Always ask myself how I ever got here?? I didn’t pick a person and say I want to be like them…but I sure did watch everyone along the way…
I noticed that nobody did anything alike. Every commander ran their squadron a different way, every instructor taught the lessons in a different manner, heck, folks even flipped burgers in a different manner. People treated others in different manners too. Some were firm, others were “by the book”, others didn’t seem to care what people did.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it 1,000 times over. No matter who you are, what position you hold, where you work or what you do, everyone around you is watching you! They see what works, what doesn’t work, how others react to your actions…and without even knowing it…they change.
I’m not the same kid that loved flipping burgers or stocking shelves at the grocery store. Heck, I’m not the same person that enlisted in the Air Force in 1998. I’m still watching and growing…and changing everyday…I’m still watching. We all need to remember (I’m included) that we are being watched…and our actions are affecting those around us…remember that!
